Sustainable Materials: Why We Use Paper

As part of our Sustainability Commitment, we prioritize eco-friendly materials in our product designs and try our best to stay as close to plastic-free as possible. All of our packaging is made (at least in part) with recyclable paper, and many of our most popular tools are made with a magical material called kraft paper fabric.

Paper

1

Recyclable Paper Packaging

The paper we use is unbleached, biodegradable, recyclable, compostable, and less processed than bleached paper.

A

Why We Love It

55% of plastic products are discarded every year because they are single use, and 38% of end-use plastic is packaging. This accounts for 15–25% of total municipal solid waste in most countries. (Gómez & Escobar, 2021). According to the United Nations Environment Programme, single-use plastic products comprise approximately 86% of all beach litter. Plastic pollution is widely understood to have a negative ecological impact, particularly in marine environments.

Since our paper packaging can be recycled and composted, it lessens the impact on the environment - even as a single-use material. Some of our paper packaging, such as our stitch marker boxes, can be reused as containers.

2

Kraft Paper Fabric

The kraft paper fabric we use is made with ≥70% wood pulp, ≥18% synthetic latex, ≤5% water, and ≥1% organic pigment.

A

Why We Love It

Kraft paper fabric is great to design with because it can be cut and sewn like fabric, and comes in different thicknesses for variations in structure.

It is surprisingly durable and conveniently machine washable. In a study by Memon et al. (2024), kraft paper run through 15 washing cycles retained 89-95% of its original tensile strength. This means our products made with kraft paper fabric are easy to clean and care for, and can be used for many years. We also love the beautiful worn-leather look that kraft paper fabric takes on with washing and use!

The wood pulp needed for kraft paper fabric requires less land and water than cotton or leather. And because it is primarily cellulose-based, the relatively small synthetic latex content sheds far fewer microplastics than other petroleum-based materials.

How We're Improving

We are always striving to improve the sustainability of the materials used in our designs and packaging. Here are some recent upgrades we've made:

  • In our packaging that includes clear windows, we changed the material from a petroleum-based plastic to a biodegradable PLA.
  • We changed our Tapestry Needle packaging to 100% paper, eliminating all plastic material.
