Sustainable Materials: Why We Use Metal

As part of our Sustainability Commitment, we prioritize eco-friendly materials in our product designs and try our best to stay as close to plastic-free as possible. Many of our tools incorporate metal, particularly stainless steel.

Why We Love It

1

It's Durable

Metal, specifically steel, is used in many of our products because it is a durable and high-quality material. Part of eco-friendly design is prioritizing materials that will stand the test of time! Broken tools end up in the landfill, and metal is much less likely to break than plastic.

2

It Sticks to Magnets!

We love magnets! Our tools are designed to work together in a system. We have many magnetic tools, and deliberately prioritize metal in our smaller notions so that they can be used together.

All (or Mostly) Metal

A

All of our stitch markers are steel or nylon coated steel, so they are strong, smooth, and stick to magnets.

B

These tools are 100% stainless steel, giving them buy-it-for-life durability, comfortable smoothness (no snags!), and the ability to stick to magnets.

Inspired by ancient sheep shears, our Yarn Snip is made from one continuous piece of rustically forged steel, meaning it will not break like alternative scissors with plastic handles. It is slim, doesn't require you to unfold or get your fingers through openings, is TSA-approved, and is streamlined for one job – snipping yarn.

Our Maker's Board has internal metal sheets which magnets can stick to for pinning up printed patterns and holding small metal tools. The metal sheets can be easily removed so the kraft paper fabric material can be washed.

Our Maker's Keep has a smooth, magnetic metal face meant to hold small metal notions like stitch markers and pins. The silicone band has an internal metal slap-bracelet piece that makes it easy to quickly put on and take off. Julie designed this in 2012, and it's been a fan favorite ever since!

Our T-pins are made with 100% stainless steel, which means they won’t rust when they get wet during blocking. They are sold separately and as part of the Knitter's Block kit.

The interior-threaded needles of our Leather Cord & Needle Stitch Holder Kit screw onto, and off of, the leather cord. This makes it easy to slip your stitches onto the cord, and means you can knit off of the cord like a leather circular needle. And, of course, it sticks to magnets!

Both of these tools were given metal components so that they could stick to magnets, making them easy to store (and find!) while you work.

The Fuzz Off Comb has a metal insert which consists of a sharp blade covered by a welded metal cage, which efficiently (and safely) slices away fiber pills. The metal insert is refillable and recyclable and the body is 100% biodegradable plant-based PLA, making it an eco-friendly depilling tool.

Our Tape Measure has a self-retracting metal tape and no locking mechanism. This simplicity means it is less likely to break, and thus less likely to end up in a landfill.

Both of these organizational accessories include metal snaps, giving them added function. The Accessory Roll's snaps mean its four separate compartments can be removed, and the Mesh Bag's snaps mean you can separate multiple working yarn strands and control the size of the opening.

Made with 100% biodegradable PLA, these two tiny tools have little metal components incorporated into their constructions. The Needle Gauge has a pin which allows the discs to swivel, and the Claw Clips have a pin and spring which allows them to open and close. By using metal instead of plastic, they have added longevity.
