How to Knit Short Rows in Garter Stitch

Knitting short rows in garter stitch is surprisingly simple: just Wrap & Turn your work...and leave the wrap! Leaving the stitch wrapped creates a "bump" that blends seamlessly into the purls. Watch our tutorial to see Julie demonstrate on the Baby Coco folded collar.

If you're working short rows in stockinette, watch our tutorial here.

How To...

1

Hold Working Yarn in the Back

Knit to where you are instructed to turn a short row, and continue to hold the working yarn in the back.

2

Slip Stitch

Slip the next stitch from the Left Hand (LH) needle to the Right Hand (RH) needle.

3

Create Wrap

Bring the working yarn forward, from back to front, between your needles.

4

Slip Stitch Back

Slip the previously slipped stitch back from the RH needle onto the LH needle. The working yarn is now in front, between the first two stitches on the LH needle.

5

Turn

Turn your work. The working yarn is now in back, between the first two stitches on the RH needle.

6

Knit!

Continue knitting as instructed in your pattern.

7

Do Not Unwrap

When you return to your previously wrapped stitch, do not unwrap or "resolve" the Wrap & Turn. Simply knit across it! The wrap will create a "bump" that looks similar to a purl bump, so the Wrap & Turn will blend seamlessly into the garter pattern.

8

Repeat As Necessary

Repeat these steps as needed in your pattern. Since garter stitch is worked by knitting on both sides, this technique will work on both right and wrong side rows.
