How to Join Yarn: Wet Felting (aka Spit Splice)

Wet felting your yarn ends together (aka spit splicing) is a quick and easy technique that saves you having to weave in your ends later. It is best for rustic wool yarn; it may affect the texture of finer yarns, and superwash or non-animal fibers will not felt.

How To...

1

Overlap Ends

Overlap your yarn ends by at least 3" (~8 cm). If you are using a chunkier yarn, you could break a ply off from either end to reduce bulk.

2

Wet

Dab your overlapped yarn ends with water. You don't need much, just enough that they are damp. You could use your own saliva in a pinch (that's where the name "spit splice" comes from!) but Julie prefers to use clean water.

3

Rub

Rub rub rub the yarn ends between your palms! You want to create a little bit of heat with the friction. Test the join by pulling gently, and rub a little more as needed until the join feels secure.

4

Voilà!

Your new yarn is now joined, and you can knit/crochet away!
